How It All Began…
Mike and Lisa Horstmann own and operate Bright Side Blooms cut-flower farm in Berger, MO.
Our Story: We built our home in 2004 on Horstmann family property. Mike’s great-great grandparents were the first to settle on Horstman Road in the 1860s. Mike spent many summers at the family farm with his grandparents, dad and aunts enjoying the outdoors, gardening and tending to the farm. Lisa, on the other hand, grew up in the city and moved to Washington in 1993 where she met Mike a couple years later. We married in 2001 and decided to build our forever home on the property up the road from the original family farm.
Fifteen years later, as we were locked down during Covid, we started tending to more landscaping and tried starting some plants from seeds. I, Lisa, always loved flowers and wanted to grow a lot of them! After starting flowers from seed, I became addicted! I started watching every video online I could find to learn how to start, plant and grow what we could fit in our full-sun landscape. I fell in love with starting flowers from seed, watching them sprout, seeing them grow and cutting them for a mason jar on our kitchen table. What a satisfying hobby!
That hobby took me to flower farming school online which then took us to the next level...a cut-flower farm.
Mike and I now enjoy growing the flowers on a 1/4 acre next to our house. We grow a mix of perennials and annuals. Spring time starts with tulips and daffodils, then zinnias, sunflowers, lavender, strawflowers, celosia, sedum, hydrangeas, alliums, and grasses/greenery. All of our flowers are field grown seasonally from spring to fall.
What makes Bright Side Blooms unique?
Good question! Why not just go to the local store and pick up a wrapped bouquet of flowers? Well, most flowers are not grown locally. They are shipped in from places like Ecuador and Columbia. Imported flowers are grown in a factory-like setting, they don’t have the natural scent of the flowers, and they are shipped dry in boxes. By the time the flowers get to you, they are already a week old, or maybe older.
With our locally grown, fresh-cut flowers, you are getting just that…fresh flowers! We cut our flowers 1-2 days before you receive your bouquet. I’ve even cut the flowers the same day I delivered the bouquet! Our flowers last longer, have brilliant color and smell delightful!
